At the Capitol
Throughout our history, CCMU has played a large role in the development of sustainable, effective public policy that helps Coloradans receive access to quality, timely, affordable care and ensures the health care system meets the needs of the underserved and providers and systems of care dedicated to serving the underserved.

Some of CCMU’s greatest legislative accomplishments include the passage of Amendment 35 in 2004, which increased funding for health care through the tobacco tax, passage of Referendum C in 2006, providing for a five year reprieve from TABOR spending requirements. Since 2007, CCMU has been a leader in the All Kids Covered Initiative (link) which has secured a number of major policy victories for uninsured kids and families in the state. During the 2009 legislatives session, CCMU actively supported HB09-1293, the Colorado Healthcare Affordability Act, which among other things expands critical public coverage programs for adults without dependent children, the disabled, parents and children.

As part of our ongoing policy work, CCMU is active in many health policy groups including the Health Advocates Alliance, Partnership for a Healthy Colorado, and the Colorado Consumer Health Initiative Health Policy Committee. In addition, over the last few years, CCMU has hosted a LEADS intern from the School of Medicine and serves on the Advisory Committee for that program.

National Health Care Reform

The passage of national health care reform in March, 2010 creates many new policy and community level opportunities to make our health care system more accessible, fair and just. CCMU looks forwards to working at the state and local level to maximize the opportunities presented by this legislation.

Throughout the debate and now as we move toward implementation, the Kaiser Family Foundation website has been a reliable source of information about the key provisions of the bill
